Brief About
Shiwer Community
Shiwer is a village located in the Kanke Local Government Area of Plateau State,
Nigeria. The village is dominated by the Ngas people with few Igbo's and Fulani's who have settled for business. The people
of Shiwer show good hospitality and love for one another.
Shiwer is close to Amper and
Dokpai. The language spoken is Ngas.
English is spoken in education and government. Ngas is used at home and in the village.
To close the language gap between the elderly and newcomers, learning English has become mandatory for young people. There has also been a shift to Hausa, now 50% of the young can communicate in Hausa.
We also have radio programs in Hausa for both Muslims and Christians.
The major source of income is farming. However, they are peasant farmers and lack the proper equipment
and fertilizers. Though there are many craft men and women who specialize in making Xylophones and local guitars called "Ndiendien."
Poverty has been the main obstacle to having an educated community.
The Shiwer people are very intelligent but majority of them have not had the opportunity to be in school.
Having drinkable water is one of the most serious and devastating problems facing this community. The community has been soliciting for support from International donors. Some spirited
individuals and other international NGOs have come to their aid. Currently there
are two boreholes in the community that allow people to draw water without going to a well.
The community also engages in self-development. The community has made efforts towards infrastructure
by constructing roads and a community Health Center. This center lacked reliable electricity, water, and proper drugs. Even though they
did not have the proper facilities they served many in the community. Recently
this Health Center
collapsed due to heavy rain fall.
Shiwer community provides the major food supply of the whole Kanke Local Government Area, their major
constraint in supplying the need is the developing infrastructure, medical facilities, and drinkable water.
The community shall appreciate any donation or contribution for her further development
